| Question: | "The condition of our fairways has led to complaints. The course is moorland and three suggestions have been made as to suitable treatment: 1. To buy spiking and scarifying equipment. 2. To lime the course. 3. To fertilize the course. We would be pleased if you would help us by expressing your opinion on the best treatment." |

| Answer/Response: | "We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing difficulties with your fairways. The suggested liming of the course alarms us as we have seen so many cases where the character of good heath or moorland turf has been irreparably lost by the over-use of lime. A light dressing of lime on certain parts may help though fertilizer treatment might effect improvements without the use of lime. This would require investigation and you should preferably have an advisory visit or send soil samples from your fairways for analysis to the Research Station. Spiking and scarifying (of the fairways) might be helpful but probably fertilizer treatment is more important than anything." |
