Question:"We are contemplating cultivating a new green from an existing patch of turf. If you can recommend a course of treatment over the winter and early spring months it would be much appreciated."
Answer/Response:"Analysis shows the soil to be over acid, a condition requiring correction. The phosphate status is very low whilst that of potash is moderate. The following treatment is recommended: 1. Slowly reduce the grass on the green areas to ½ in. and continue mowing at this until growth stops. 2. During the autumn and winter top dressing of sandy friable compost should be applied at 4 to 6 lb. per sq. yd. Each top dressing should be worked into the turf surface. Top dressing will improve the putting surface. 3. During the winter apply ground carbonate of lime evenly at 2 ½ oz. per sq. yd. 4. In the early spring gently but thoroughly scarify the turf. Mowing should follow, the implement being set to cut at 5/16 in. Some light rolling should be carried out if the green's surface is soft but it should not be overdone. 5. Next apply a complete fertilizer. 6. As growth increases in vigour reduce the height of cut when mowing to 3/16 in."
