Question:"I enclose two plugs of turf attacked by a disease which appears as small circular brown patches. The turf was obtained from the sports stadium, Hong Kong, and the trouble occurs on a sward predominantly of Axonopus compressus. Would you kindly let me know the cause of the trouble and corrective treatment?"
Answer/Response:"We have examined the plugs of turf and found various saprophytes present and a root necrosis caused by a fungus. We suggest a mixture of 1 oz. corrosive sublimate (mercuric chloride) and 2 oz. of calomel (mercurous chloride) mixed with 25 lb. of sand be applied to 100 sq. yd. of turf. Repeat applications may be given after four to six weeks. It should be remembered that the above mixture is poisonous to life and can damage the grass if given too heavily."
