Abstract/Contents:Compares natural turf to artificial turf, stating that when "thinking of buying and installing a new sports pitch, then [one] has many factors to consider before making that decision - and one of these is whether to choose natural turfgrass or an artificial surface...[and] there is a place for artificial turf, but before [making] a decision to purchase a new sports pitch [one should] consider all the facts." Discusses potential benefits of using natural grass, including contribution of oxygen production and carbon dioxide reduction. States that "in addition to environmental characteristics, natural grass is a safe product to play on. It absorbs heat from the sun on the pitch, the risk of injury is low, it's cheap, and last but not least, it's self-repairing." Also discusses potential health and safety concerns related to the use of artificial grass, stating that "it could be shown that playing on artificial turf has directly contributed to injury." Mentions heat, bacteria, weeds and fungae, and rubber crumb as general health and safety concerns to using artificial turf. Also mentions the effect artificial and natrual grasses have on playing conditions. Concludes that "the Section Forage Plants and Amenity Grasses of the European Seed Association has shown there is a place for artificial turf in the sports industry. However, there are many serious factors to consider before deciding to purchase a natural or artificial pitch for construction or reconstruction."
