Abstract/Contents: | "Freezing and thawing, steep slopes, runoff, and low fertility of bank soils make cover establishment on bare roadbanks difficult. Of thirty-five plant species tested for adaptation to such areas, promising perennial species selected for stabilization include fescue, Pensacola Bahia, crownvetch, Lespedeza sericea, broomsedge, coastal Bermuda, and daylilies. Common Bermuda and lovegrass are excellent nurse crops when seeded with sericea, crownvetch, and Pensacola Bahia. Abruzzi rye is a good, quick-growing nurse crop for crownvetch. Soil preparation is no problem on slopes less than 2:1, but is unfeasible on steeper slopes; thus, seeded species should be confined to flatter areas; rooted plants to steeper areas. Mulch aids all species; is required for slow-growing species. Two tons per acre of straw mulch is usually recommended. Initial fertilizer studies indicate a need for frequent nitrogen applications on non-legumes. Mowing may be required to control growth and maintain visibility, but excessive mowing reduces root growth, plant vigor, and seed production. If excessive mowing is necessary, an adequate fertilizer schedule should be followed." |
