Abstract/Contents: | "Merion bluegrass turf was produced in standard solution cultures and after 4 months growth was treated with varying levels of nitrogen and of a polyethylene glycol to modify osmotic pressures of the nutrient solution. Plants were inoculated with Helminthosporium sativum to study treatment effects on disease resistance of a well established turf. Nitrogen solutions at 100 ppm. lowered resistance of turf to high temperatures and caused a decrease in foliar growth. Foliage yields decreased as osmotic pressures of the solutions increased from 0.5 to 1.50 atm. High nitrogen and low osmotic pressue combinations produced leaf tissue which was soft and succulent. The average number of Helminthosporium lesions per leaf blade and the average size of lesions increased with increasing levels of nitrogen and decreasing levels of osmotic pressure. Merion bluegrass is highly resistant to Helminthosporium sativum when grown under field conditions. It appears that some modification in development of foliar tissue under specific solution culture treatments increases proneness of the tissue to disease infection. In no instance did the pathogen kill the turf plants." |
