Abstract/Contents:"Persistence of 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1-methoxy-1-methylurea (linuron) and N,N-dimethyl-2,2-diphenyl-acetamide (diphenamid) was studied in 11 soils from Kentucky over a period of 17 months under greenhouse conditions using bioassay technique. Leaching studies were done with two soil types and 5 and 25 lb/A active ingredient of the herbicides applied on surface of 13" x 3" soil columns and leached with 1, 2, 4, and 8 inches of water. One-inch sections of soil columns were bioassayed for herbicide activity. Organic matter content appeared to be the principal soil characteristic affecting phytotoxicity, ED50 values after 17 months for soils low (<1%), medium (1-3.5%), and high (13.7%) in organic matter were 2.5, 4-16, and 28-53 ppm respectively. In general the breakdown of linuron appeared to be slightly faster than diphenamid. Downward displacement of diphenamid by percolating water was 2-4 times faster than linuron. Movement of both herbicides was more in sandy loam than in silt loam soil."
