Abstract/Contents:Wildlife plays an interesting part on golf courses to either a lesser or a greater degree. Many courses provide the perfect habitat for many forms of wildlife and encourage this yet too much of a good thing can become a control problem. Environmental controls must be watched to protect the wildlife of air, land and water. Pesticides must be safely used to prevent injury directly to the wildlife or indirectly through water or soil pollution or feeding on plants made toxic after application. Many golf courses actually aid in protecting wildlife by being designated as wildlife preserves or just by providing safety features in the design to allow natural settings in the roughs or unused areas. Environmental action groups often oppose golf courses, yet these same courses often provide homes for many types of wildlife. Includes interviews and specific examples of environmental issues on golf courses, including groundwater quality, pesticide use, irrigation water consumption, and wildlife management.
