Abstract/Contents:Discusses mole control on golf courses. Reports that "the primary food of moles is not grubs, but earthworms." States that "the only sure-fire way to control moles is to use traps. Unfortunately, most people don't use traps correctly and the moles usually escape." Mentions a potential chemical control method, Talpirid, "which is in the form of a gummy worm placed in the burrow for moles to eat." Also states that "like moles, skunks and raccoons will make a meal of night crawlers and other earthworms when they can get them. When these mammals are foraging for earthworms, they tend to mash the turf down or spread the turf apart rather than actually dig into the soil or roll back the sod." Concludes that "Milorganite applied to the turf surface at the full label rate will stop animal digging...the application of Milorganite [should] be made at the same time that rescue grub controls are applied (in the fall or spring) so that the animal digging is stopped while the grubs die (which can be 3 to 10 days after the insecticide application)."
