Question:"We are concerned by a noticeable increase of fog grass which, whilst the greens remain uncut, shows up in vivid contrast to all the other grasses. Our ninth green has been relaid and the affected patches put on the outside but even so new patches are appearing. Can you state whether fertilizer treatment can have caused this type of grass to flourish and if there is any method of chemical control."
Answer/Response:"We presume you are referring to Yorkshire fog when you speak of "fog grass". This grass is very common all over the country and is frequently found on putting greens where it is able to withstand close mowing. Naturally if a green is treated with fertilizer all the grasses in the sward respond. There is no such thing as a differential fertilizer capable of feeding the good grasses yet not those you do not want. There is no chemical capable of destroying Yorkshire fog on a green without putting the green out of play for some time. Most people try to reduce the coarse grass by frequent wire raking or by patching with clean turf."
