| Question: | "Our green has been surveyed and we find quite noticeable unevenness in its surface levels. We would like your advice on how to correct these variations and the enclosed chart shows them." |

| Answer/Response: | "We suggest that top dressing be carried out to correct the unevenness. The main autumn dressing should be applied evenly over the whole green, but when it is absorbed by the turf, further progressive dressings should be made to eliminate the unevenness. Several additional light top dressings should be applied to the lower areas but at a rate of application which can be absorbed by the turf. It is important that checking be done using a straightedge as the top dressing progresses to ensure that the applications are made only where required and that progress follows a desired pattern. By judicious top dressing of this nature it should be possible to raise existing levels something like ¼ in. per annum where required. This may sound a slow process but in two or three seasons such treatment should produce a near perfect level green." |
