Question:"We intend to provide an additional bowling green in one of our parks next year and we would like your views on seeding the green, bearing in mind that bowlers prefer a fast green. If the green were seeded we should like to know how long it would take before it could be put into play."
Answer/Response:"We are interested to learn that thought is being given to seeding your proposed bowling green. Just as fast a bowling surface can be produced from seed as from turf. In fact there is no reason why a highly successful green should not be produced from seed. Naturally a longer period of establishment is necessary and a green sown in, say, September 1962 is unlikely to be ready for play before the 1964 season. The production of the grass sward from seed is considerably cheaper than importing sea-marsh turf and if the seed bed is clean and rogue grasses are carefully removed during the establishment period, a turf true to type will be produced. It can therefore be anticipated that maintenance of sown greens will be more straightforward than for sea-marsh turf greens as no inherent problems arise from the imported silt layer. Providing sufficient time for establishment can be left we would certainly suggest you sow the green."
