Question:"We intend to construct a bowling green using our own labour and after studying publications on the work we have excavated the site to the required size and depth. From your experience of bowling green construction to what extent and with what should we build it up. Information on layout and falls of drains would also be appreciated. It is intended to seed the green."
Answer/Response:"It is usual to provide a bowling green with a clinker ash carpet with a finished thickness of 6 in. We specify 3 in. to 3/4 in. material, this to be blinded with a thin layer of fine hard ash. Underneath the ash we put 3 in. land tiles at 15 ft. centres running into a perimeter main drain, this at a depth of 1 ft. 6 in. at the high corner falling to 2 ft. 6 in. at the lower corner. This main should be 4 in. tile with clinker ash brought up above it to the ditch. A minimum of 4 in. of soil is needed and the physical condition of this may have to be improved by the addition of sand and/or granulated peat. Lime may be needed and, of course, fertilizer. If you send a sample of the soil we can make tests and advise you on all these points. It would pay you to prepare the site in the next few months and fallow it next summer to ensure a clean bed on which the seed should be sown at the end of August. Spring sowings are sometimes risky and if the soil has a lot of weed seeds in it there are likely to be difficulties with a spring sowing. A suitable seeds mixture is:- 8 parts American Chewings' fescue, 2 parts American browntop sown at 1 ½ oz. per sq. yd."
