Question:"We would be pleased if you could provide us with some estimate of the annual cost of maintenance of our proposed sports grounds."
Answer/Response:"The finished area of your playing field is going to be about six acres and will include one cricket square. From our discussions with you, we are of the opinion that you want a good standard of playing field. The first item is that of labour and we think that with two winter pitches and one cricket field one man could probably manage and we would expect you to have to face a charge of about £12 a week, possibly with a house in addition. It might be necessary to provide supplementary labour during the main growing season or, alternatively, for members to help out if this can be relied upon. As regards materials, we think that a cost of about £150 a year should be considered at this stage, this being made up of the following items: Fertilizer .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 62, Grass seed for renovation purposes .. .. .. .. .. 20, Weedkiller, worm killer, fungicide, line marking material .. .. 19, Top dressing materials for the square and including sand for the winter pitches .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 43, Miscellaneous .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. 6 150 Under top dressing we are including about £40 for sand for winter pitches and this: (a) may not be necessary, and, (b) may be considered a luxury that the club cannot afford. On the other hand, with your fine soil, we suspect that it will be necessary at any rate for a few years. Fertilizers might also be reducible after a few years. A further item may have to be added according to your bookkeeping procedure - namely depreciation on capital equipment at, say, 20%."
