| Question: | "It has been suggested that a ridge is made around the hole on the greens caused by pulling out the cutting implement after a hole is cut. It was suggested that if a board was used in conjunction with the hole-cutter the ridge would be prevented. Our Greenkeeper thinks the ridge is caused by players' feet treading around the hole when picking out the balls. We shall be glad to have your views." |

| Answer/Response: | "We think the explanation put forward by your greenkeeper is very likely correct but when consolidation around the hole itself results in a ridge it means the hole should be moved more frequently. A lip around the hole can be caused by withdrawing the hole cutter vertically but your greenkeeper is too experienced for this to happen. The hole-cutter should, of course, be turned as it is being withdrawn." |
