Question:"We enclose turf samples taken from presumed fungal rings which are approximately 1 ft. in diameter. The rings bear no fruiting bodies but make a slight depression in the turf. Perhaps you would advise me on corrective treatment."
Answer/Response:"Our biologist has examined the plugs you sent and considers that the small green rings are not caused by any fungus disease. We have noted a similar condition before and it appears that there is local activity by bacteria which results in the breakdown of the fibre of the turf. The best thing you can do to correct the rings is to give them a good forking and then work in some sandy compost. These rings are usually not permanent in character and you will probably see no more of them after the winter. They might, however, cause some interference with the trueness of the bowling surface but your own top dressing with sandy compost will help in this respect."
