Question:"Concern has been expressed on the possibility of over-watering our greens. The maximum amount of water we can apply with our existing labour and equipment is 500 gal. per green per week. Is this too much and if so would the over watering cause, (a) the spread of disease, (b) the grass to go "sour"?"
Answer/Response:"We consider your greens can stand a greater quantity of water than you can apply. In 1955 we found that as much as 5 gal. of water per sq. yd. per week was needed to maintain satisfactory growth on our experiment ground though the actual water requirements vary on different types of land. There is no great danger of watering spreading disease. Fusarium patch has been seen whilst artificial watering has been going on but generally only immediately after a fertilizer dressing has been applied. Artificial watering should not cause your greens to go "sour". This is more likely to occur when rain continues after the greens are already in a saturated state during the autumn and early winter."
