Question:"We are investigating the possibility of providing an automatic water supply for the race course. Could you let us have any available information on the quantity of water and the duration and frequency of each application. We understand you recommend about 5 gal. per sq. yd. per week for golf greens. On the other hand, we think it more desirable to supply a large quantity of water at infrequent intervals but we have no information of what a reasonable quantity would be or the frequency at which it should be applied during dry weather."
Answer/Response:"The figure of 5 gal. per sq. yd. per week is a useful one to begin with. The loss by evaporation amounts to something like 0.1 in. per day or, shall we say, 3/4 in. per week. When supplying water there is an unknown amount of water lost by direct evaporation, run off, unequal distribution etc. so that 1 in. per week should be reckoned as being necessary and 1 in. of rain is just over 4 ½ gal. per sq. yd. Actual requirements depend a great deal on soil and the weather. Obviously, moisture affects not only grass growth but the going and it is, therefore, fairly clear that the amounts required in a single watering or, indeed, in several waterings, must be found out individually. Your general premise that it is better that a useful quantity at infrequent intervals be applied rather than small amounts at more frequent intervals is acceptable. A lot of shallow watering makes for a poor root system."
