Question:"We have dispatched to you by parcel post, nine boxes containing soil samples from our greens. Would you please analyse these and recommend suitable fertilizer treatment?"
Answer/Response:"Your samples took between seven and eight weeks to reach us and, unfortunately, they had suffered damage in transit to the extent that the Post Office had re-packed them before sending them here. The damage was so bad that all the samples were mixed together as the boxes had disintegrated into pieces of cardboard and paper. We have drawn from the mixture a subsample and carried out the analysis on this and we hope our findings will be helpful. The results indicate that the soil has a pH of 7.1 and it is well supplied with phosphate and potash. Fertilizer applied to the greens should contain only low amounts of these plant foods and the following is suggested for spring applications: 3 lb. sulphate of ammonia per 100 sq. yd., 2 lb. hoof and horn meal or dried blood per 100 sq. yd., 2 lb. superphosphate per 100 sq. yd., 1 lb. fine bone meal per 100 sq. yd., ½ lb. sulphate of potash per 100 sq. yd., ½ lb. sulphate of iron per 100 sq. yd., 28 lb. friable compost per 100 sq. yd. For supplementary dressings during the growing season we suggest you use: 3 lb. sulphate of ammonia per 100 sq. yd., 1 lb. hoof and horn meal or dried blood per 100 sq. yd., 28 friable compost per 100 sq. yd. The application of lime should be avoided for the time being."
