Question:"We would be interested to learn if you have any information on the use of cork as a substitute for pebbles in bowling green ditches. Our bowlers are rather keen on the idea and have produced samples of granulated cork and cork off-cuts which I am forwarding for your inspection. I shall be interested to hear your opinion on their value and whether there is any possibility of cork harbouring or encouraging fungal diseases which might effect our greens."
Answer/Response:"We have seen whole corks used for bowling green ditches on two or three occasions and they seemed to be quite satisfactory. The larger pieces you sent would be most suitable and we do not know of any real snags. They certainly are nice and soft to the woods and the only possible snag might be that rain would perhaps float the cork out of the ditch. Corks do get dirty and shabby after a time but it is unlikely that it would encourage any disease."
