Question:"Referring to your report on our football pitch you urge us to do the minimum of rolling. During the past winter we have had demands from teams, public and the press for more and heavier rolling of the field. We should be glad of your further comments on this matter."
Answer/Response:"You will recall that the soil surface on the football pitch was found to be severely compacted, a condition brought about by play in wet conditions and aggravated by heavy rolling. The effect of heavy rolling is to increase compaction of the surface soil, impair its drainage qualities leading to mud formation and more bare ground. Further, it produces conditions completely unsuitable for grass growth. A certain amount of light rolling can be done during the playing season but if skid marks and holes are corrected using a fork followed by thorough harrowing or brushing and spiking the surface can be restored satisfactorily without having to roll heavily. If the restoration of the surface is done immediately after a game there is no chance of the foot marks and scars becoming dried out or frozen thus creating a demand for the use of a heavy roller."
