| Question: | "In connection with the trouble we have experienced due to Ophiobolus patch on some of our greens we send soil samples for analysis as requested. A sample of the sand we now use is also included." |

| Answer/Response: | "Tests on the soil samples show that the pH values lie between 5.6 and 6.2. These figures show that there has been an appreciable rise in the pH of the greens since samples were last analysed in 1955. As no lime dressings have been advised we conclude that the lime content of the sand is responsible. It contains 2.2% calcium carbonate. As the rise in the pH may explain the trouble you have had with Ophiobolus we recommend that you cease to use this sand on your greens. You should try to find a lime-free sand and we shall be pleased to test samples of any you think may be suitable." |
