| Question: | "In the maintenance of our playing fields selective weedkiller is applied by means of a low volume sprayer. Following the work a few instances of drift damage to neighbouring crops have been recorded. It is thought that this may be due to the hot dry weather drying up the selective weedkiller before it can be absorbed by the weeds and thus the residue has drifted. Would you inform us of any precautions that can be taken to avoid drift." |

| Answer/Response: | "The danger of selective weedkillers drifting cannot be completely overcome. We do not think that the dry hot summer has in any way increased the danger. The likelihood of drift occurring can be reduced by carrying out spraying on still days though we appreciate such conditions are rare. The use of high volume sprayers working at low pressure also helps as the size of droplet is larger than that put out by a low volume sprayer. Keeping the spray bar low and fitting a simple sort of guard around it, e.g. hessian suspended from a simple frame, would also help." |
