Question:"We have had no rain for some three months and our fairways are extremely dried up. Starweed seems to be the only thing growing on them and we wonder how this weed can best be controlled."
Answer/Response:"The starweed (Plantago coronopus) is a member of the plaintain family and having tap root is able to withstand dry conditions. The weed lives mainly on light land and is usually found near the sea. All the plaintain family are susceptible and readily killed by any of the "hormone" selective weedkillers. Spraying of such materials should not be done under very dry conditions since the grass is apt to suffer a further setback. It would be best to postpone treatment until late summer or better still until next spring."
