| Question: | "It is proposed to place a chain link fence around the inside of the thorn hedge surrounding one of our new school playing fields. We would appreciate your recommendations as to the distance the fence should be placed from the hedge having regard to maintenance." |

| Answer/Response: | "We wonder if it is really necessary to erect a chain link fence inside the boundary hedges. If the hedges were trimmed or layered and any gaps filled by post and rail fencing would this not suffice? We make this point as the erection of fences within hedges creates maintenance difficulties. If the hedges are to be kept cut and the wire not damaged by slashing or the work hindered, the fence would need to be some 1 1/2 yds. away from the hedge. This would leave a strip between the fence and the hedge where grass and weeds would grow and they would have to be cut at least twice or possibly three times each year. Some implement would therefore have to be provided for this purpose. Perhaps these points could be considered." |
