| Question: | "This season, after rain, we have been concerned about the additional surface water on the pitch, which has not drained away as might be expected. We first thought the trouble was due to the exceptional rainfall early in the season but unfortunately the water does not drain away under ordinary conditions as it used to. Your comments would be of interest." |

| Answer/Response: | "Muddy football pitches have been the rule rather than the exception this winter and after the recent frosts many have got seriously worse. The trouble is due to the failure of the rain to percolate through the soil after it has been churned up by players' feet. The churning spoils the structure of the soil making it plastic and once this happens progressive decline takes place. Assuming the drainage of the field is normally satisfactory the permeability of the soil can be increased by regular spiking and manual forking followed by dressings of sand." |
