Question:"During recent weeks we have noticed the appearance of peculiar, roughly circular patches (about 12 in. diameter) on two of our greens. These patches are darker in colour than the rest of the turf. Inside them the surface has settled so that the patches are lower than the surrounding turf. Perhaps you could tell us the cause of the trouble and any measures we should take to overcome it. We enclose samples."
Answer/Response:"Our plant pathologist is making careful examination of the turf samples and soil you sent in. His examination is not yet concluded. The condition is, however, a rare one and we are inclined to think it is of bacterial rather than fungal origin. We suggest that you treat the patches as follows: Closely hand hollow tine fork the patches and a band around their perimeter about 1 ft. in width. The forking should be close, about 1 in. between fork holes. The next step should be to make up a 50-50 mixture of soil and sharp sand and to rub this by hand into the area hollow tine forked. There is a further reference to this condition in Turf disease notes, 1959 - Ed."
