Question:"The excessively dry weather has caused maintenance difficulties and our greens are parches and brown though still putting quite "truly". We think the turf will recover when rain comes but heavy rain presents its own problems as on hard surfaces the water merely runs off the higher ground and pools in the hollows. To assist in getting the rain into the turf we propose to hollow tine fork the greens. We will then apply a dressing of fish meal and top dress with compost. Would you please comment on this proposed line of treatment."
Answer/Response:"We are sorry to learn of your difficulties and, of course, many other courses have suffered this season due to the drought. The proposed hollow tine forking of the green would certainly help the rain to penetrate the dry ground. We wonder, however, whether it would not be sufficient to treat only the higher parts of the greens' surfaces as probably the hollows will be quite soft enough. The wisdom of giving the fish meal dressing and compost top dressing is questioned as some of the actual plant foods from the previous fertilizer applications will be available to the grass. If the greens are fed unnecessarily there is a risk of encouraging disease. We feel that the compost dressing would be sufficient."
