Question: | "We should be obliged to receive your observations on the two enclosed samples of charcoal. We are particularly interested in their possibilities for use on bowling greens and golf greens." |
Answer/Response: | "We have examined the samples of charcoal and find that the sample marked as going through 1/4 in. mesh is too coarse for use on bowling greens or golf greens. The other sample marked 1/8 in. to dust would be absorbed into the bowling or golf green turf quite readily but straight dressing of such materials are not advised. They tend to leave a band in the turf for years to come, through which roots often fail to penetrate. It is advisable to mix the charcoal with soily materials or compost before application thus building up a good rooting medium." |
