Question: | "A sample of water is being forwarded and we ask if you will test it as to suitability for watering our greens. As far as can be ascertained the water seeps through limestone rock, into a railway tunnel whence it is piped to a stream. The flow is a few thousand gallons per hour and there is little difference noted in summer and winter period. Would you also inform us how much water is required by a golf green to maintain it satisfactorily during drought." |
Answer/Response: | "We have tested the sample of water and find it to be reasonably satisfactory as to quality. Substances toxic to plants have not been found in sufficient quantity to do harm. As might be expected, because of the seepage through the limestone rock, the water is hard and will tend to make the greens alkaline. The extent of this is that in nine or ten weeks watering at 2 gal. per sq. yd. three times a week the equivalent of 2 oz. lime per sq. yd. would be applied to your greens. The use of lime tends to encourage coarser grasses, worms, weeds, etc. but in our opinion the benefits of being able to water your greens during occasional droughts would far outweigh any ill effects that might result from the lime in the water." |
