Question:"Our 12th green is in very bad condition and we suspect that the water in the nearby well that we have used for watering is contaminated. We are sending samples from the green, from the bottom of the weel and of the water and we would be interested in your comments following your examinations."
Answer/Response:"We have completed tests on the samples sent. Examination of the turf plug from the green suggests that it is affected by Ophiobolus disease. We would like a further plug to check this. Regarding the water, it does seem that there is something badly wrong with it. A sample taken from the well at this time will have a lot more fresh water in it than it had when last used for watering the green, so that the water which is dirty now would have been considerably dirtier then. We find a considerable amount of salt in the water indicating strong contamination with sea water and this would not do the green any good. Moreover, the sludge in the bottom of the well is pretty foul stuff containing a lot of ferrous sulphide in fine muddy form and we do not think this would help. In addition we are able to get a lot of oil residue. It is noteworthy that whereas in most water samples we can find species of living micro-organisms there were none in this sample. It is likely that the Ophiobolus disease (if confirmed) can be a direct result of using this water which is slightly alkaline as well as unpleasant."
