Question:"We have sent a sample of the ash arising from the burning of cotton waste. Would you advise us as to whether it would be of any value as a carrier for our fertilizer dressings."
Answer/Response:"Bearing in mind the pH values of your greens the cotton waste ash is quite a good material but because of its high pH it could only be used in small amounts as part of a compost. No more than 10% of the ash should be mixed into your compost as it is required. It would not be advisable to add the ash to the whole of your compost heap as it is being made as it may become necessary after a time to omit the ash due to its alkaline reaction."
