| Question: | "We are reconstructing our 3rd green and find ourselves short of turf for the surround. We have decided to sow this area and should be glad if you would recommend a suitable mixture of grass seed. We are of the opinion that we should avoid ryegrass in the mixture as it might invade the green." |

| Answer/Response: | "We feel it would be in order to include ryegrass in the mixture to be used on the surround of the 3rd green. We think it is unlikely that the ryegrass will invade the green but care will be necessary when the seeding is carried out to ensure that none of the seed blows on to the green area. The following mixture would be suitable: 20% S23 certified perennial ryegrass, 15% crested dogstail, 10% browntop, 55% S59 creeping red fescue the rate of sowing would be ½ oz. per sq. yd. If you prefer to use a mixture without ryegrass the following is suggested: 25% crested dogstail, 10% smooth stalked meadow-grass, 10% browntop, 55% S59 creeping red fescue. This seed mixture will have to be sown thicker than the other one and a rate of 1 oz. per sq. yd. is advised. You would find that this second mixture is more expensive than the first one containing ryegrass. The ryegrass mixture was, in fact, used and an excellent surround produced. - Ed." |
