Question:"We enclose a cutting from one of the German gardening magazines describing a number of drought resistant grasses. We would be obliged if you would read this and tell us whether you think such grasses would be of service to us here on the sandy soil of our golf course."
Answer/Response:"We have read the article and do not really think that there is much in it which will directly concern you at Frankfurt. The grasses about which the author is writing, for example Cynodon dactylon, are essentially grasses of warm countries. Some of them grow quite well in this country and on the Continent, particularly in Mediterranean areas, but suffer considerably from low temperatures during the winter months. If they did not acutually die completely at Frankfurt during the winter they would certainly be thinned out to a considerable degree and be very weak by the spring. Of course, if you are particularly interested in trying some of these grasses you might obtain some of the finer strains of Cynodon (also known as Bermuda grass) and some fine strains of Zoysia japonica from America, put them down in your nursery and see how they go on."
