Question:"We are very worried about a coarse strong grass which is spreading on our fairways, particularly in the moister areas, and surrounds of the greens. A sample of the grass is enclosed. Could you advise us on any measures to be taken against it?"
Answer/Response:"The grass, which is a species of Panicum, likes moisture, and has probably been encouraged by recent wet seasons. We suggest harrowing the fairways with grassland spiked harrows to lift up the coarse stems and leaves before gang mowing of the fairways takes place. This harrowing should be done several times in the autumn, early winter and again in the early spring. A fertilizer should also be given to the areas in which Panicum is growing to assist the most desirable finer grasses to thicken up. A dressing of sulphate of ammonia at the rate of 200 kilos per hectare will be useful in this respect and may be repeated next spring. Another method of attacking the grass is by the use of certain chemicals, and we suggest that trials be made with maleic hydrazide and dalapon."
