| Abstract/Contents: | "A 2-year field study investigated the effects of growth retardants on Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) growth and development. At selected dates following application, turf plots treated with Mefluidide (N-(2,4-dimethyl-5 (((trifluoromethyl) sulfonyl) amino) phenyl) acetamide), MBR-18337 (undisclosed), flurprimidol (EL-500) (a-(1-methyl ethyl)-a- (4- (trifluoromethoxy) phenyl) -5 pyr9midine-methanol), and paclobutrazol (PP-333) ((2RS, 3RS)-1- (4-chlorophenyl) -4, 4-dimethyl-2 (1,3,4-trizol-1-yl)-pentan-3-ol) were evaluated for height reduction, seedhead suppression, leaf color and injury, and dry matter yield. All the studied growth retardants significantly reduced shoot growth when compared to unmowed, untreated controlls. Paclobutrazol treatment of turf induced a height reduction of 54% in 1981 and 38% in 1982, 8 weeks follwoing application. Mefluidide and MBR-18337 suppressed seeedhead development, although flurprimidol and paclobutrazol did so only when applied in combinatiuon with mefluidide. Treatment with growth retardants caused an objectionalbe leaf injruy with paclobutrazol inducing the most severe and persistent injury of the tested retardants." |
