Question:"We are most concerned at the lack of pace from prepared pitches this summer. Can you advise on any problems causing this and solutions?"
Answer/Response:"In this case a site inspection was necessary to determine the factors involved promoting lack of pace on prepared pitches. The usual causal factors of this phenomenon; fibre and layering of inappropriate soil types like sandy or peaty materials, were not seen in this instance. Having discussed the preparation programme with the groundsman we conclude that the lack of a watering point to the table is the primary problem. This may seem paradoxical, applying water to firm the ground, yet the management of moisture through the profile is the key to producing a good surface and at present controlling moisture is impossible. Lack of success with rolling is due to your preparation being totally reliant on the weather. Dry summers may produce apparently hard soil conditions but do not consolidate through depth, something which can only be achieved through rolling a moistened soil which is then allowed to dry. On the other hand too rapid drying as appears to have happened this year can lead to brittle surfaces, which break up rapidly under play producing the poor performance you describe."
