Question:"With so many new golf courses under construction it is difficult to know where to turn to obtain sound advice with regard to layout and construction. We have some 120 acres of land and would like to build a course to a high standard, appreciating that good drainage is essential to sustain year-round play. Can you recommend anyone who can help us who wont charge the earth, we are not concerned over hiring a name, merely an architect with a good track record."
Answer/Response:"To many golf club members obtaining the most effective design of a golf course on a tract of land can be very much a matter of opinion and bearing this in mind, we would always advise on hiring an architect who is completely divorced from the Club. If planning to produce an in-house design you can be assured that Club politics will come to the fore, a guarantee of major arguments and long-term dissent. This is not to say the same will not happen by bringing in an architect but at least the management of the day will be seen to provide an independent professional assessment of the sites potential and a more decisive approach and better layout should result. The Institute has considerable knowledge of the problems of golf course construction which crop up as a direct consequence of inadequate provision in the design, although these often only appear once the course has come into play, this is based on research and practical experience developed over sixty years. Against this background the Institute can now offer a golf course architectural service of a wide ranging nature, which includes the preparation of all necessary contract documentation. As an initial step in a new golf course development, we would strongly recommend a feasibility study. Once undertaken the Institute will then see the project through to practical completion of construction and further by providing advice on an annual maintenance programme. We believe a very high degree of on site supervision from our staff is necessary to ensure the creation of a quality finished product. A CAD (computer aided design) system arms us with up to the minute technological backing for the creation of the best possible layout and most appropriate specification for the site, our own laboratory services carry out all necessary testing. A portfolio of completed projects is available, we believe the quality of our work is the best advertisement."
