| Abstract/Contents: | "Buffalograss [Buchloe dactyloides (Nutt.) Englem.] seed establishment for turfgrass use is considered a slow, sometimes difficult process. In an effort to improve rate of establishment, vegetative prerooted plugs were evaluated. Fifty by fifty mm plugs of buffalograss were prerooted 2, 4, and 8 weeks in the greenhouse in cavity trays, and compared to non-prerooted plugs. Fertilization at the time of harvest was also evaluated. The plugs were planted May 20, 1986, and observed throughout the growing season. Stolon counts were made for the first 4 weeks and color ratings and percent cover were measured for the entire growing season. After 2 weeks, prerooted pluts showed significantly greater stolon counts, percent cover and improved color ratings. Near the end of the growing season, differences became less apparent with all treatments showing excellent establishment. Some interactions occurred between prerooting and fertilization, but further analysis seems to indicate that signifianct differences were attributed to prerooting." |
