Abstract/Contents: | Discusses dead greens during the summer of 2005, citing "a 'low-carb diet' that effectively suffocates turf, especially bentgrass" as the cause." Explains that "carbohydrates in plants serve as an energy reserve under stressful conditions such as heat stress. When the plant demands more carbohydrates under heat and stress and none is available." Briefly discusses research by Bingru Huang, Ph.D., designed "to find heat-tolerant turfgrass species and eventually expierment with importing their metabolic mechanisms into the DNA of bentgrass." Concludes that "the early stages of [Huang's] studies have shown that Agrostis scabra's [rough bentgrass] metabolic rate - the need for carbohydrates under heat stress - is much lower than that of golf-quality bentgrass." |
