Question:"Many of our members are keen to encourage wildlife on our course. We would like some expert advice on what we can do to increase the diversity of animal and plant life on areas of the course not directly in play. Who can we contact for such information?"
Answer/Response:"With the increasing awareness of environmental issues and the added pleasure of playing golf on an attractive course, conservation is very much in the spotlight. However, conservation is not just a matter of letting nature take its course, management of areas or features we wish to retain is essential. Therefore, it is important that you get the right advice regarding management to promote wildlife. The Golf Course Wildlife Trust, 19 Stratford Place, London, W1N 9AF (tel: 01-409-8099) was established in 1987 and offers specialist technical advice on conservation matters. The Nature Conservancy Council (NCC) is a government funded organisation which is responsible for the National Nature Reserves and Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI's) and can provide valuable information. The NCC can be contacted in England at Northminster House, Northminster, Peterborough, PE1 1UA (tel: 0733 40345), in Scotland at 12 Hope Terrace, Edinburgh, EH9 2AS (tel: 031 447 4784) and in Wales at Plas Penrhos, Penrhos Road, Bangor, Gwynedd, LL57 2LQ (tel: 0248 355141)."
