Question: | "Our course has in the past been famous for the heather in the rough, which looks very attractive when flowering in late summer. In recent years, however, growth has become much more sparse and we are afraid that we are going to lose this attractive feature entirely. As far as can be determined the heather has received no treatment at all in recent years." |
Answer/Response: | "Heather does need some maintenance if it is to flourish and if neglected commonly takes on a long and straggly growth, gradually becoming thin and sparse. To improve the density of growth, burning is effective in early summer, always assuming of course that this can be done in safety. Burning not only stimulates new growth of existing plants but seems to encourage the growth of new heather seedlings, besides reducing competition from grasses and weeds. Light mowing (i.e. topping) at least once a year, preferably using a heavy flail type of machine, is an alternative which can also do much to improve the density and attractiveness of heather." |
