Question: | "I enclose a small fern-like plant taken from an area of my rather large garden which I wish to develop. Can you identify the plant for me and does it provide any indication of the nature of the soil? I have not yet decided how to develop the area. If I put it down to lawn can you tell me how to do it?" |
Answer/Response: | "The plant is actually a moss (a species of Polytrichum). This moss is often found growing in dry, acid, rather infertile soils. Planting up with rhododendrons, heaths and heathers might be a possibility in an acid soil if it is suitable in other respects. If you decide to make a lawn, we could arrange to visit the site and advise on its development in detail." |
