Question:"Some areas of grass on a bank adjoining our cricket outfield have recently turned a very noticeable reddish-brown colour. The area in question is infrequently mown and is not used for playing purposes, but the condition looks unsightly and we are afraid that it may spread to our outfield and cricket table. A sample of turf is enclosed for your advice and comments."
Answer/Response:"The grass has been attacked by aphids or greenfly which can be seen to be present in fairly large numbers if the sample is closely examined. More commonly thought of as pests of ornamental garden plants, aphids do occasionally cause damage to turf. Trouble is usually reported when warm summers follow mild winters as the insects survive and migrate in very large numbers under such circumstances. It is unlikely that your table or outfield will be affected as in our experience damage does not occur on regularly mown grass. If control measures are considered necessary on your surround then a suitable insecticide, e.g. one based on di-methoate would be suitable. Several commercial products based on this ingredient are available and should be handled with care as the chemical is toxic to humans."
