Question: | "I am somewhat worried by the poor colour of my lawn. It has received the fertilizer treatment as suggested in your last report and also ample quantities of water while the weather has been so dry. I enclose a sample of turf from my lawn for your examination and comment." |
Answer/Response: | "The turf sample has now been examined in our laboratory and it appears that the annual meadow-grass which forms a high proportion of the sward in the lawn is affected by Anthracnose, a disease which is caused by the fungus Colletotrichum graminicola. This disease is quite common on annual meadow-grass but its importance is uncertain. Control measures are not normally considered necessary but it would be desirable to improve the vigour of grass growth and thus discourage the disease. The disease is associated with compacted turf deficient in nutrients and is probably made worse by the excess of fibre to be found in the turf. There are some signs that the turf remains wet for long periods probably through excessive watering or poor drainage properties which only aggravate matters. We would suggest that you should provide plenty of aeration on the lawn prior to applying the final fertilizer dressing if this has not already been done. Further intensive aeration treatment together with thorough scarification should be completed at an early stage as part of the autumn programme of work. It is also possible that some attention is required to improving drainage generally." |
