Question:"We are cultivating a site for seeding a new tennis court this August. How can we minimise possible trouble from weeds?"
Answer/Response:"A most effective though costly method would be sterilization of the seed bed with a soil sterilant such as methyl bromide or dazomet. The former has to be used by licensed persons because of its toxicity but with your own labour you could use dazomet which is produced as granular prills which can be rotovated into the top 225 mm (9 in.) of the soil. The treated soil in either case has to be covered with polythene sheeting to trap the gases. Unfortunately after sterilization with methyl bromide, ophiobolus patch disease can sometimes follow because of the imbalance of soil fungi. The established practice is to fallow the seed bed for as long as possible, cultivating the weeds out as they appear and before they set seed. Paraquat and diquat which are total weedkillers also have their place to kill off weeds - they kill quite rapidly upon contact with the weeds. Two or more applications may be required but there should be at least three clear days between the final spraying and the sowing of seed. Strict precautions are required when using any chemical and always ensure that the manufacturer's recommendations are carefully followed."
