Question:"We have experienced problems on our seaward fairways over the last couple of years which have been fairly dry in our part of the country. We have tried to intensify maintenance as far as possible by doing plenty of spiking and harrowing, but could you suggest any further action?"
Answer/Response:"These fairways are, of course, on almost pure sand. As shown by soil tests they are not particularly short of plant foods and the lime status is quite high. It would seem that improving moisture holding capacity would be the best way to bring about improvements. This can be achieved by top dressing with suitable material which could be of a soily nature or organic nature according to what is economically available. Apart from soil, suitable materials which might be used include well-rotted farmyard manure (if this can be found) and dried sewage. The latter can be obtained fairly cheaply in certain parts of the country but before purchase of such material a favourable analysis should be obtained. Other alternatives are peat and spent mushroom compost. We would be pleased to examine samples of any proposed material."
