Question:"During the last few weeks a number of discoloured patches have become increasingly prominent on my lawn. These areas occur particularly in the slight hollows which are found in the surface and appear to be affected by some kind of fungal growth. I enclose a sample of the turf for examination and would be grateful if you could advise us as to control."
Answer/Response:"Our Biologist has examined the sample of turf from your lawn and the grayish-black growth occurring has been identified, not as a fungus, but as a lichen, namely Peltigera sp. This lichen can be controlled using calcined sulphate of iron at a rate of ½ oz. per sq. yd., bulked with plenty of screened sand or compost to ensure even application. Lichens of this species are, however, usually associated with wet conditions, which explains why the growth is confined to hollows in your lawn. Long term control can, therefore, be achieved by measures designed to reduce surface moisture, particularly forking and sanding. Lichens also appear under conditions of poverty and we would suggest that a more adequate fertilizer programme may be essential this year. If you would care to send a representative soil sample from the lawn we would be pleased to determine nutrient and possible lime requirements. Adequate fertilizer dressings will encourage the grass to grow into the affected areas and smother out the lichen present."
