| Question: | "For the first time in years our courts are severely affected by worm casts. Can you suggest reasons why this should happen and tell us the most suitable treatment for earthworm control?" |

| Answer/Response: | "Without full information we would not like to suggest a specific cause of the worm invasion but some change in management is likely, e.g. liming or ceasing to box off cuttings. There are several materials which can be used for earthworm control; the most persistent is probably lead arsenate but products based on the chemical chlordane (also quite persistent) are probably the most popular these days. Both chemicals possess a degree of mammalian toxicity and should be used with care. Less toxic (and less persistent) chemicals such as sevin are used in some circumstances." |
