Question:"Some of the fairways on our links are very poor, the swards being very thin and lacking in vigour. Signs of drought quickly become apparent with the onset of dry weather. We are anxious to maintain the fairways in as natural a condition as possible and therefore we would like your advice as to how we might improve them. Soil and turf samples are enclosed from some affected parts."
Answer/Response:"The condition you describe has not been uncommon following the recent dry seasons which have severely weakened swards on sandy soils such as occur on links. The lack of vigour in the swards in your case appears to be related to the poor moisture holding capacity of the very sandy soil (as in the sample you enclosed) since chemical analysis shows no serious plant food deficiencies. We recommend that you apply a dried pulverised sewage to the affected fairways at the rate of 4.5 ton/acre during the autumn and/or early spring. It will probably be necessary to carry this out over a period of 2-3 years to gain the full benefit from such work. This treatment will raise the organic content of the soil, thus improving its moisture holding capacity, as well as supplying at the same time a small amount of nutrients which will assist the recovery of the sward without producing excessive growth. A light dressing (2 cwt./acre) of a general granular fertilizer could be applied in the coming spring to hasten improvement but the treatment should not be regarded as a routine one."
